Abandonment

Landscape and the fullness of emptiness

XVIII edition, 2022

The 18th International Landscape Study Days were held online on the afternoons of 18, 24 and 25 February 2022. The event is the main occasion for public reflection and discussion on the Foundation’s lines of research.

The theme of the abandonment of workplaces and living spaces – from the rural world to the mountains, from minimal living spaces to large industrial complexes – has long been at the centre of any discussion on the future of our world and at the origin of a design vitality that, also in the field of landscape, is generating new working methods and operating mentalities.

In fact, a look at current forms of abandonment requires an in-depth study that landscape and garden culture can refine with an attitude and instrumentation that looks at this condition as a value in itself, and a condition for growth, imagining every action not as a reparatory measure, but a precious exercise in coexistence.

The places of abandonment are thus not only the theatre of memory or the space awaiting processes of replacement, and the study days intend to open a discussion on how the condition of suspension or refusal can generate a “nature of abandonment” that the landscape gaze, with the complicity of many other contributions, is capable of grasping and “cultivating” in a proactive and shared key.
