Spaces and manmade elements together create a surprising arrangement of towers, courtyards, gardens, museum routes in which rooms and open spaces, horizontal and vertical communicating paths alternate uninterruptedly. Many pieces have been erected, dismantled, erected again, added and taken away by historical events spread aver at least two millennia. Despite this, as a whole it provides a unitary historical testimony.

Castelvecchio has a perceptible vitality – a demonstration that the quality of a place and its very identity are fist of all given by the endless striving towards new balances between conservation and innovation; this balance can only be found within a co-ordinated, authoritative administration of the place. For half a century now Castelvecchio has been expressing its nature in the form and life of a museum that has not become a museum piece in itself, but acts as a gravitational centre for acquiring knowledge of its own history, the town’s history and the history of the town’s arts.
