Both buildings stand on ancient structures dating back to the 14th–15th centuries, partly incorporated into subsequent modifications carried out up until the first half of the 20th century. The current state of the buildings reflects the most recent significant alterations: those carried out in 1936 for Palazzo Bomben, and at the end of the 19th century for Palazzo Caotorta, with parts of the earlier structures incorporated into the present buildings. In 1944 the back of Palazzo Bomben was bombed and the roof, floors and part of the walls collapsed.

The whole has been brought back to life by a complex and prestigious restoration project coordinated by architect Tobia Scarpa between 2002 and 2003. All the external spaces, belonging to the Foundation but open to the public and also connected to the city by a footbridge over the Roggia, took the form of a true urban garden with pedestrian access only, designed and created in 2004 by Domenico Luciani, with the collaboration of Ippolito Pizzetti and Luigi Latini.

History of Palazzo Bomben

In 1999 when the restoration work on palazzo Bomben began, coordinated by architect Tobia Scarpa, the damage caused by the air strike of 7 April 1944 was nothing in comparison to the state of ruin that the building was in, the roof and floors of the north wing having collapsed. It was only possible to proceed with renovation, completed in 2003, after carefully recovering the collapsed materials.

Little was saved of the original north wing, which now houses the modern auditorium. On the other hand, the large entrance hall was left unchanged, characterised by two large arched doorways, now closed with glass doors leading to two yards. The smaller one, located on the left side of the complex, now houses a sculpture by architect Carlo Scarpa, a gift made to the Foundation by his son, Tobia. The other arch leads to the large garden which extends all the way to the edge of the Roggia and which joins palazzo Bomben to palazzo Caotorta, in a design by Domenico Luciani, with the cooperation of Ippolito Pizzetti and Luigi Latini.

Today, thanks to the availability of an auditorium, a seminar room, exhibition rooms and the garden, the renovated spaces of Palazzo Bomben host some of the public initiatives of a scientific and popular nature organised by the Foundation itself or in cooperation with other entities and associations, and also intend to offer the city a suitable venue for various types of public cultural events.
