[…] The decline of the strategic military function of the Treviso fortress since the Napoleonic era during the last century led to the progressive physical and structural obsolescence of the works, aggravated by repeated massive thefts of brick material (1806, to the benefit of the Palmanova fortress), demolition of parts, construction on the embankments, opening of gates, filling in of the counterscarp and part of the moats, with modification of their hydraulic system, and disintegration of the brick surfaces due to invasive flora. […] Towards the middle of the last century [the 19th century, ed.], the first levelling and planting works began, allowing some of the relevant areas to be enjoyed as public gardens. […]
(text by Domenico Luciani, taken from Acque e mura di Treviso, 1994, journal of the workshop held between November 1993 and June 1994)
Organised in collaboration with the Master’s Degree in Landscape and Garden Architecture at the IUAV University of Venice as an integral part of its academic calendar, the workshop benefited from the presence of Imma Jansana, a leading figure in the European landscape architecture scene. Under her guidance and with the contribution of other experts, as well as the Master’s teaching staff, the students examined an emblematic site in the historic landscape of the city of Treviso, reflecting on its role in defining the forma urbis, on its role as an “urban park” much loved and enjoyed by citizens, on the value of the relationships between this extraordinary place and the rest of the city, and on the essential care required by a landscape asset of such importance, to the point of outlining some possible design interventions.
