Around Ca’ Scarpa

Minimum spaces in the historic city centre

21 May, 21–26 June, 3 July 2021

In the heart of the city of Treviso stands Santa Maria Nova, a deconsecrated church that had long been used as a warehouse. In a short space of time, based on a design by Tobia Scarpa, it became the Ca’ Scarpa exhibition centre, open to the city. This first act provoked a reversal of perspective towards a closed world, perceived as impenetrable – the former Finance Department building – rich in vegetation, courtyards and cloistered spaces awaiting an idea that could restore life and new uses to them, straddling the private and public spheres.

Students on the Master’s Degree course in Landscape and Garden Design at the IUAV University of Venice worked on this focus, reflecting on the quality of public space, the value of the relationships that characterise the landscape of a historic city, and the care needed for the myriad of small spaces that make up its dense fabric and constitute its wealth. They did so with the help and guidance of architects Juan Manuel Palerm and Leopoldo Tabares de Nava who, with the contribution of other experts, encouraged the students to engage in a design experience capable of weaving a four-way dialogue between the property, a landscape research centre such as the Foundation, the city and the university.
