When, in the mid-1980s, with Gaetano Cozzi, we discussed the ‘seriousness of the game’, the formula might have seemed like a play on words, almost a contradiction.

Instead, it was the first step of the Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche for a series of initiatives of high cultural commitment, which contributed decisively to overcoming ancient preconceptions in this field of studies. Proof of the ‘seriousness’ of the choice came in 2010 from the Accademia dei Lincei, with the invitation to Gherardo Ortalli to hold the Calamandrei Conference of that year on the theme of the Seriousness of the game. The text of that conference, unpublished until now, opens today “Ludica Minima”.
