Looked at from a general perspective and over the long term, there are many planes on which games and war meet, confront each other and, in some cases, merge.

The first cases to be covered by this vast category are games that have an obvious function as a military exercise: from the chariot racing of antiquity to regattas, the mediaeval battagliola and on to the aristocratic horsemanship exercises of modern times, at the borderline between social convention and military training.
On occasion, war and games come together in extremely ambiguous fashion, as in what we now consider the “Games” par excellence, the Olympics, which are intended to promote peace but which, for some mass sports, also represent a weaponless war.
The intermingling of conflict and games becomes explicit in operations of a professedly military character such as great army manoeuvres or the use of war games by General Staff or War Institutes.
And war itself, inasmuch as it accentuates its mythical dimension, exalts chance and relieves those who take part of responsibility for their actions so that psychologically it can become a quasi ludic experience.
Such extremely delicate issues are dealt with in this volume by eleven specialists in the subject.
