The thirty-fourth International Carlo Scarpa Prize for Gardens is dedicated to Hospitalfield, a place that embodies the hospitality rooted in its history.
With newly inhabited spaces, carefully tended gardens and programmes devoted to contemporary art and education, proud both of its place in the Scottish landscape and the welcome it extends to its inhabitants and of belonging to the international milieu that witnessed its birth and continues to support it.
Founded on the east coast of Scotland by a monastic community at the beginning of the 13th century, Hospitalfield is now an ‘artists’ house’, an evolving project in which the confines between nature and art, architecture and landscape intertwine and are exploited through the active involvement of artists and local inhabitants exploring new instruments and modes of expression.
