Giorgio Amati Collection

Born in Frascati (Rome) on 1 July, 1920. Having moved from Rome to Gorizia with his family, he obtained a leaving certificate in maths and science in Gorizia; at the beginning of the 1940s he earned his degree in Theoretical Physics at the Scuola Normale of Pisa and, at the end of the war he obtained a second degree in civil engineering in Florence. After a brief period of teaching at the Naval Academy of Livorno he was hired by the Municipality of Livorno to head the office preparing the new zoning plan. In the second half of the 1950s he also conducted freelance professional activity preparing the zoning plans for a number of Municipalities in the Provinces of Grosseto, Livorno and Florence. He collaborated with «Urbanistica» magazine. He was part of the interdisciplinary group that won the competitive tender for the new San Giuliano neighbourhood in Venice. He then chose to work solely as a freelancer.

In Veneto, he contacted the Municipality of Treviso, which gave him the assignment of drawing up the new municipal Master Plan (identified in Italian with the acronym ‘prgc’), and provided him with an actual Planning Office. Around the same time, he completed the projects in Tuscany and took on other assignments, always related to urban planning, in the Provinces of Gorizia and Treviso. He employed the same methodological approach to direct and accurate analysis of the territory and on-site research into specific planning and environmental issues of the places and settlements for arranging the various levels of urban planning tools.

Alongside his professional activity, he continued to study the various national and local planning issues in Veneto and Tuscany and in the Isonzo area, also from a theoretical and cultural point of view. He published various articles and took part in public meetings and conferences with specific presentations.

He passed away in Treviso on 23 March 1977, following a brief illness, and was buried in Gorizia in the family grave.

Contents of the collection
The documentation produced or collected by Giorgio Amati over the course of his career, relating to development of the Master Plan of Treviso and other cities (Livorno, Vernio) and on issues of urban planning and civic art. It also includes personal and professional certificates, some correspondence, press cuttings and publications (mainly his works). Overall it is comprised of 90 folders, preserved in 5 envelopes.
